Located in the tequila capital of the world — Jalisco, Mexico — the headquarters for Patrón Tequila are as ornate and beautiful as the tequila they make. The pink, welcoming facade of Hacienda Patrón says all you need to know about this brand. They do one thing, they do it well, and they do it with passion and focus that honor the history of tequila.
If you’re looking for quality tequila, you really can’t go wrong with Patrón.
As the brand states, “We didn’t invent tequila, we just perfected it.” That sense of perfection is what leads them to conclude that their tequila is the finest in the world. Is it? That’s up to you. All we can do is give you the facts.
Start with 0% additives — never a bad place to start. Patrón lets the flavor of their tequila arise naturally over extended periods of time. This means doing things the “hard” way and allowing no shortcuts in the production process. Patrón sources only the finest raw materials to create their complex, deep flavors.
Weber Blue Agave takes about eight years to ripen. Patrón’s Jimadors are experts in identifying and harvesting only the agave that’s ready — that means the perfect sugar content and a ripe piña. These piñas are then chopped and baked in small brick ovens, allowing them to cook evenly throughout. A two-ton volcanic stone wheel is used to crush them, after which they’re allowed to ferment for three days and then distilled.
Aging takes place in handmade barrels. Patrón Reposado receives two months of aging, while Extra Añejo received ten years. Then those small-batch spirits go into individually crafted bottles using sustainably harvested Portuguese cork and French crystal.
Patrón also performs the whole process at their Hacienda, which is entirely dedicated to making their tequila. Their sustainability initiatives also extend to their production process: eco-friendly reverse osmosis irrigation, recycled agave byproduct, and the employment of 30 workers in the production process. Their legacy is legendary — their results are unquestionable.
The Patrón Tequila
Patrón’s flagship offering is their line of four tequilas. The first is their Silver, which is made from fine Weber Blue Agave. Their Reposado receives at least two months of aging, which imparts some smooth oak flavor. Next is Añejo, which is aged in oak barrels for at least 12 months for more complex flavors. Finally, their Extra Añejo is barrel-aged for over three years.
Patrón also makes other tequila collections, including Roca Patrón (Silver, Reposado, Añejo), Gran Patrón (Smoky, Platinum, Piedra, Burdeos), Patrón XO Cafe (tequila blended with fine Arabica coffee), and Limited Edition tequilas and extras.
Brand Reviews & Reputation
Patrón is among the most respected tequila makers and is considered to provide pricey but high-quality spirits. They are excellent at marketing, which can arouse the suspicion of some cocktail snobs, but in general, the quality of their tequila tends to live up to the hype. However, if you’re looking for tequila on a budget, you may want to start elsewhere.
