Start with 0% additives — never a bad place to start. Patrón lets the flavor of their tequila arise naturally over extended periods of time. Weber Blue Agave takes about eight years to ripen. Patrón’s Jimadors are experts in identifying and harvesting only the agave that’s ready — that means the perfect sugar content and a ripe piña. These piñas are then chopped and baked in small brick ovens, allowing them to cook evenly throughout. A two-ton volcanic stone wheel is used to crush them, after which they’re allowed to ferment for three days and then distilled.
Aging takes place in handmade barrels. Patrón Reposado receives two months of aging, while Extra Añejo received ten years. Then those small-batch spirits go into individually crafted bottles using sustainably harvested Portuguese cork and French crystal.
Patrón also performs the whole process at their Hacienda, which is entirely dedicated to making their tequila. Their sustainability initiatives also extend to their production process: eco-friendly reverse osmosis irrigation, recycled agave byproduct, and the employment of 30 workers in the production process.
