Can I Grow My Own Weed in Arizona?
Yes, but it’s a little complicated.
You can grow up to six plants per person and up to 12 plants if multiple adults share a household. (Though if you have six roommates in one house, you probably shouldn’t try growing 36 marijuana plants.)
You have to grow your marijuana plants in an enclosed space, inaccessible to minors, and it has to be hidden from public view. Plus, you can only grow your weed plants at your primary residence. (Sorry, no weed-mas tree to hang lights on for Santa in the living room window.)
If you grow weed where it’s visible to the public (without using drones, binoculars, or hidden cameras), the first violation is considered a petty offense. A second violation of this law is a Class 3 misdemeanor.
You also can’t sell any homegrown Maryjane, but you can give another adult up to one ounce of the sticky icky as long as there’s no compensation involved. (Include a card that says “Merry Christmas,” “happy birthday,” or “Congrats on the new living room wallpaper!”)
A Note on Growing Weed in Arizona as a Renter:
If you rent, know that your landlord can (and probably does) legally prohibit you from growing weed because marijuana is still illegal under federal law. Additionally, renters also must be aware of what’s allowed and what’s not according to their lease. Even though you can smoke weed legally in Arizona now, landlords can still put certain restrictions on your signed lease.
The legality of marijuana at the state level is meaningless if your lease forbids smoking and the use of illegal drugs because both are against federal law. Federal laws don’t require reasonable accommodations for marijuana users, so no such law exists.
If you are the landlord, make your expectations apparent. Clarify in the lease that you intend to abide by all federal and state laws, and your tenant must do the same.
Special Weed Growing Laws in Arizona for Medical Marijuana Patients:
You can legally grow up to 12 medical cannabis plants for your own use in Arizona if you have a current medical marijuana card and live more than 25 miles from the closest dispensary. However, you must fulfill both requirements to benefit from this privilege. Another bonus is that authorized caregivers of medical marijuana patients are also entitled to this privilege.

Any adult over 21 can buy up to one ounce of weed and no more than five grams of marijuana concentrate. Medical marijuana patients can buy up to two and a half ounces every 14 days.
The current Arizona marijuana laws state that a person who is caught with more than a legally acceptable amount of weed but less than two and a half ounces is guilty of a petty offense. A first-time violator has to pay the court no more than $100 and will possibly have to attend up to four hours of drug counseling or education.
A second violation of this law results in the possibility of up to eight hours of drug education or counseling.
A third violation is a Class 1 misdemeanor.
